John Szalay is a true legend, and his journey to the Lorain Sports Hall of Fame is nothing short of extraordinary. In the realm of basketball, Szalay emerged as a force to be reckoned with, placing his name into the archives of sports history. As the starting point guard on the 1974 State Championship Basketball Team, he led his squad to glory, showcasing his leadership and strategic court vision. The accolades followed in abundance with Szalay consistently earning recognition as a First Team All-Conference (Lakeland Conference) and First Team All-Northeast Ohio District player. His skill and determination were evident, securing a place on the Lorain County All-Star Team and garnering an All-Ohio Special Mention.

Szalay’s greatness is not only measured in awards but is evident in his exceptional records. He held the Clearview High School Season Assist Record (165), the Clearview Single Game Assist Record (14), and the Clearview Career Assist Record (371), underlining his expertise as a playmaker on the court.

In the world of football, John was no less outstanding. As a varsity football letterman, he was a key contributor to the 1973 State Football Runner-up team despite being sidelined by an injury in his senior season. His tenacity and resilience on the field left an indelible mark on the sport.

Moving on to higher education, Szalay continued to shine playing basketball at Heidelberg College. His dedication to academics and athletics exemplified the true spirit of a scholar-athlete. It was his dedication that set him on the path to becoming not just an exceptional player but also a phenomenal coach and ultimately a legend in his own time.

For an astonishing three decades, John Szalay served as the Boys’ Basketball Head Coach, leading by example and instilling a winning culture in every team he engaged. His remarkable coaching career includes (3) District Titles, (8) Sectional Titles, and (14) Conference Titles. His impact is undeniable with an overall coaching record of 401 wins and 266 losses, a testament to his tactical brilliance.

Mr. John Szalay is not just an all-time favorite coach; he is a mentor, a motivator, and a leader in the community. His accomplishments as a coach are numerous with (7) PAC Conference Coach of the Year titles, (10) Lorain County Coach of the Year titles, and (2) District Coach of the Year titles. His influence extends far beyond the court, shaping the lives of countless young athletes and inspiring them to reach for their own greatness.
